Many of the african tribes BP visited while in Africa shook with their left hand as a sign of peace and trust, because to do this they must remove their shield from their left hand and hold it in their right with their spear, giving up a the use of both in order to shake hands.

 

BP thought this was quite honourable and so it became a symbol of Scouting all over the world! Hope this answer's your question
