UGANDA SCOUT CYCLING EXPEDITION 2011
Introduction:
Uganda Scout Association is responsible for the development of scouting and community behavior through moral support to young people. Scouting is aimed at contributing to the development of young people, socially, emotionally, intellectually, spiritually and physically in order to produce a responsible and acceptable citizen in their communities. Whose Mission is to educate young people to play a constructive role in Society?
Goal of the Cycling Expedition
The main goal of the expedition is to raise a campaign for Peace and Environment through Scouting. During the expedition, the Scouts will present a pack of peace and environment to various groups and Scouts and the community along the way and to encourage everyone to plant two trees every year `one for peace and the other for environment.
Theme:
Be peaceful to the Environment
Background of the Expedition:
Cycle for peace and environment is going to be the first scout cycling event in Uganda and is set to happen in February 2011 and is intended to start in Uganda at the Uganda Scout Headquarters and end in Sweden in August 2011 and seeks to show that life is best approached in a spirit of exploration, adventure and enterprise; to influence and better inform attitudes towards Peace and Environment; to build wider recognition that unforeseen circumstances and uncertainty are inescapable features of life and that absolute safety is unachievable; and to demonstrate that sensible education and preparation enable an appropriate balance to be achieved in the world today. All in all the main purpose for this is to carry out campaign and promote peace and environment.
A team of 20 Scouts (14 cyclists and 6 support team) will cycle from the Uganda Scout head quarters Kampala to attend the 22nd world scout Jamboree is kristanstag- Sweden.
Scouting being Adventurous, we learn by doing and a scout is some someone who can find paths through unexplored territory.

Objectives:
To educate the public and leaders into a realistic and more accurate awareness of peace and environment and of the benefits that may arise from considering the challenges of peace and environmental conservation.
• To show that appropriate preparation and precautions in the campaign for peace and environment that enable us to make a better world that one has to live in acceptable limits of safety and peace in context of environment.
• To reinforce the key principle that the great majority of people are well intentioned, reliable and trustworthy; and to recognize that those who make misjudgments should not necessarily be blamed but to fight for a common cause of Peace and Environment.
• To argue that sensible acceptance of risk assists the development of self-confidence, self-esteem and courage, which in turn helps develop positive and optimistic attitudes to others and to life.
• To demonstrate that creativity and enterprise in any form depend on a willingness to experiment and to enter unknown territory.
• To assist young people to recognize that uncertainties and hazards in life are inevitable and to help them to learn how to make balanced judgments about hazard and risk as they prepare for adult life.
• To evaluate the effect of the Campaign and to publicize the specific difficulties and opportunities which have been identified as far as peace and environment are concerned.
• To develop an appropriate strategy, in partnership with other bodies, to plan for future actions or initiatives
Expedition route:
The Scouts will cycle through: ten countries I 3 separate expedition sections numerated below:
A) SECTION 1- AFRICA
Kampala-Uganda; to Tunis-Tunisia via Kenya, Ethiopia, Sudan, Egypt, Libya, Tunisia
B) SECTION 2-MEDITERRANEAN
Tunisia to Italy
C) SECTION 3- EUROPE
Italy, Switzerland, Germany, Denmark and finally Sweden
Training:
In preparation to CYCLE DE JAMBOREE in Sweden in 2011,
• the cyclists had the first test to Bushenyi western Uganda for the National Scout moot, approximately 322 km, and the team set off from Kampala on 29th June 2010 and was successfully completed
• The second text route followed on 20th July where the Scouts cycled to Kenya to attend the 13th world scout moot which started on the 27th of July 2010. This took the team five days. And was a success.
• The 3rd test route will be cycling to Gulu in October 6th and we hope to celebrate the independence in Gulu.
• And we will have the last test route in November 26th, this will go to Kasese.
The training team also came up with the training plan, where the cyclists will be cycling to various places and camp in Entebbe Missoli Village. The training activities include peace campaign, where the cyclists will be talking to the community about peace, tell them what peace is and why there is need for peace in the whole world.
The training will go on for 24 weekends, starting the 18th of Aug. 2010
Environmental activities. This involves planting of trees for 24 weekends and through out the expedition. We will be talking to the community about environmental conservation and all other activities that are involved.
WE ARE ENCOURAGING ALL PEOPLE STARTING WITH THE SCOUTS TO EVERY YEAR PLANT ATLEAST TWO TREES. ONE FOR ENVIRONMENT AND THE OTHER FOR PEACE.
The Cycling Expedition will, starting this year 2011 be a scout annual event and scouts will be cycling to various destinations of the world advocating for peace and environment.
